My Pet Playbook Pros and Cons for the Petmate Top-Loading Crate:

Pros

Easy Use Top Loading Door

The top-loading door makes it much easier to gently place nervous cats or small dogs inside without wrestling.

Solid Outer Shell Protection

The rigid plastic shell offers solid protection during car rides and in busy clinic waiting rooms.

Secure Doors and Latches

Metal doors and latches provide a secure closure that most pets cannot push open.

Adequate Air Ventilation

Side ventilation openings help air circulate while still giving pets a semi-enclosed, den-like feel.

Structured for Easy Cleaning

The top and bottom pieces typically separate, making deep cleaning and open-bed use at home much easier.

Cons

Storage Disadvantages

Hard carriers take up more space in storage than fully collapsible soft-sided carriers.

Noise Control

Without a pad, the plastic floor can be noisy and uncomfortable on longer rides.

Accommodating Large Pets

The carrier can feel heavy once a pet is inside, especially for people with limited upper-body strength.

Pet Comfort

There is no built-in cushioning, so you must add your own blanket or bed for comfort.

Real Experience Review

The top-loading door works great if you have a smaller pet that you can easily lift. My pet is not so small, so I have to use the regular door to put them in the carrier. But the top load door does help when it comes to containing her at the vet while still allowing the vet to do some examinations that don't require her being out of the carrier. So it gives me a lot more control if she is anxious or nervous during her doctor's visit.
